In Which Maggie Writes a Book about Cole & Isabel

I’m just going to say the facts right upfront: I have written a companion book to the SHIVER trilogy, and it’s called SINNER, and it’s a standalone, and it’s coming out July of 2014, and it follows Cole and Isabel’s lives in Los Angeles. It’s the novel I’ve been calling WhitePantsNovel. (more here)

It took pretty much everything in me to not tell the world what I was working on, because I have to admit: after the complicated and lengthy writing process for The Dream Thieves, SINNER was like a vacation. It was fantastic to be back in Cole and Isabel’s heads. Readers had pointed out that their story wasn’t ended — a fact I was well aware of — but I didn’t want to return to them unless I had a very specific story that I needed to tell. It has to eat my arms, a story, in order to gain admittance to the cluttered Stiefvater schedule.

At the beginning of the year, it started to eat my arms.

I thought: am I really doing this? Surely not. I’m in the middle of a very time-consuming series, and also, I just agreed to write a middle grade group project. But the thing about Maggies is that there is a very fine line between think and do. By the time something I’ve said something out loud, there’s no turning back.

So I changed my summer plans. I flew to L.A. to look at research places (dragging along my family and Brenna Yovanoff and Jackson Pearce as well).

See that face? That is insanity-face.

I took in some sights and sounds and smells and got to work.

I made a giant playlist. I remembered that once upon a time, I wrote books with kissing scenes. I remembered that once upon a time, Cole St. Clair had been a rock star.

Oh, man, I had such a good time. I really hope you guys love it. I did it for me, but I did it for you, too.

Here is the official description:

About Sinner
Sinner (978-0-545-65457-9, $18.99, hardcover; 978-0-545-65458-6, $18.99, ebook; Ages 14 and up) follows Cole St. Clair, a pivotal character from the #1 New York Times bestselling Shiver Trilogy. Everybody thinks they know Cole’s story. Stardom. Addiction. Downfall. Disappearance. But only a few people know Cole’s darkest secret – his ability to shift into a wolf. One of these people is Isabel. At one point, they may have even loved each other. But that feels like a lifetime ago. Now Cole is back. Back in the spotlight. Back in the danger zone. Back in Isabel’s life. Can this sinner be saved?

  • Sophia

I’m so excited!! You made my day with this news and I can`t wait to read this book! :D

  • Chi

This may be shocking, but I’m barely excited at all (but that’s due to the fact that I haven’t read Forever yet, but now it’s been so long that I need to reread Shiver and Linger first). I’m looking forward to The Dream Thieves though and Requiem. GOODNESS, AM I ECSTATIC FOR REQUIEM!!! xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD <—–(that's probably the way you're all feeling about Sinner, but then again, I really can't express how much I love Lament and how long I've been waiting/dreaming for Requiem in this comment box)

  • Julie Wolfe

I read this post three times just to make sure it wasn’t some whacked-out joke. I am so excited you are finishing Cole and Isabel’s story. I eventually accepted their parting at the end of Forever, but was never truly satisfied. I’m curious to read their journey in Sinner. Woohoo!!

  • Grace Hunter

I’m peeing myself! I swear it! Oh, I’m so excited!!! I can’t wait, thank you so much Maggie! You’re my favourite author! Thank you, thank you!

mmm WUAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SOOOO HAPPY mmm but you would show us about what happen the other couple … sam … and grace ? what happen next ..? there would be something about them … even a little?

  • Pernille

Good God woman! When do you sleep???! Most exciting news :)

Oh my god! I’M DYING NOW!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been counting down the days for The Dream Thieves since like 4 minutes after I bought The Raven Boys, so like 54 days since then, 5 days from now. And now there’s going to be another book for Cole and Isabel! I AM DYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to stop reading the post and breathe to calm myself down enough to continue reading! Man I love your books Maggie!!!!!!!!!! I’ve read the Shiver Trilogy three times with a group of irritating friends trying to stop me, I’ve read The Scorpio Races, and I’m reading The Raven Boys for the third time!!!!! I can’t tell you how much I love your books!!! I’ve made it a future goal to read Lament and Balled in the future because I’ve been saving my money to buy The Dream Thieves and now I have to save up for Sinner!!!!! Man I can’t even tell you how happy I am!!!!!!!! People always ask me who my favorite author is but I always say that I don’t know. But then I read the Shiver Trilogy, and now I can answer that question! Then I read The Scorpio Races and The Raven Boys. You are my favorite author ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have one more thing to finish off. I know you write for an older audience, but I’m 12 years old ( I’ve started reading your books when I was 12 too ). So I guess I’m a bit ‘ little ‘ to read your books but I love them and I’m not going to stop reading them ( and who cares, it’s not illegal ). So thank you for being such a fantabulous author, I love your books!!!!!!!!!!

  • ahoffman1979

    Obviously, YAY about the book!

Secondly, what specific locale on the CA coast do those pics show? I went on a wonderful trip there in 2012 with friends from high school, and the boardwalk and pedestrian overpass (as seen in the background of the car pic) look pleasantly familiar.

    • maggiestiefvater

:) It’s Santa Monica pier — very touristy, but so very pleasant.

      • ahoffman1979

That’s what I thought! My friend and I stayed in this wonderful historical boutique hotel just across from the pier while we were there, and the area was downright lovely. We saw everything from the lights on the ferris wheel at night to an amateur Spanish hip-hop video being made under the pier to all of the skaters and medicinal marijuana stands in Venice Beach. :)

      • Ana

        I can’t believe you were at Santa Monica pier…so close…yet so far…
The world looks different now that I know Sinner is coming out. I’m not kidding. Everything really looks and feels different…it’s like a strange dream.

    Hi Maggie!!!
I wanted to know if you were ever coming to Canada for like a tour or something. If you are, could you please tell me where you are going to be going to?

    • maggiestiefvater

Yes! I’ll be in Canada in just a few weeks:

      • Adiba

This is bitter sweet news for me.
I’m super exited that your coming to Canada, but the bitter part is that I live in downtown Toronto :(
Well, enjoy your tour!!! I’m still buying The Dream Thieves!!!

My email is kj70214@yahoo, gmail or if you don’t want to put yours out there.

I love you so much!!! I read your books ever since I was a sixth grader in middle school and now as a high schooler I must say I can’t wait for SINNER! The way you write and express yourself is so uniquely beautiful! I truly am a HUGE fan of the Shiver trilogy. I remember that I would stay up reading your books late at night and I would be obsessed with what happened next. I respect you so much because of what you said about happy endings and because you are such a role model. You have come such a long way and I’m so glad that you will give us a better insight on Isabel’s and Cole’s relationship. I further wanted to thank you for being such a great author and allowing us to have an open interpretation after the end of Forever. I hope that you were able to see because I think you’re amazing and beyond amazing. Hopefully I put a smile on your face. I know there are going to be successful days in your future! :)

I loved the environment of mercy falls. just reading about sam and grace’s daily routine makes me feel so happy and at ease! I just finished reading the trilogy again and i literally feel like some excitement in my life is missing since the series is over :( i always feel sad after finishing a good series but without anything to follow shiver, linger, and forever i literally feel empty. I really hope that you’ll continue the series! Pleaseeeee :) 3 books just doesnt feel like enough for such an amazing story, amazing characters and chemistry, and beyond amazing writing.
